Beginning Stargazer’s Toolkit

Besides the telescope and accessories, the following items are must-haves in any stargazer’s toolkit:-

1. A Planisphere which shows locations of constellations and deep-sky objects during different times of the year – make sure you have one that’s meant for your latitude;

2. A Compass to get your bearings right;

3. A Moon Map to help you identify the interesting craters and other lunar features;

4. An Astronomy Flashlight which emits red light that will not affect your night vision; and

5. The book, “Discover the Stars”, is a wonderful read. It is well illustrated and a handy guide for any beginner.

You may add other “essentials” such as warm clothings and hot beverages in cooler months, a foldable chair and a positive mind that the weather and the sky will be on your side.

As a beginner stargazer, you may also wish to check out some extremely useful items here: how-to guides, books offering tips on backyard astronomy, moon maps, star charts, planispheres, etc.
